How to Psychedelic Rock
This is a guide of tips & tricks that I have learned over the years to get started playing some Psychedelic Rock (this page covers a broad sound from ‘Pink Floyd’, to ‘Frankie and the Witch Fingers’). These are mostly scattered nuggets of information so you can refer back to this at any time for pointers.
Tone

Practice Routines
Triads
Chord Progressions
- Aeolian
- Mixolydian
- Dorian
- i IV (Breathe - Pink Floyd)
- Make sure to arpegiate the flat 6th then onto the 6th and hold it
Modulation
Chord extensions
- 9ths & 11ths
Phrasing
- When using a delay, play a chord and then tremelo it [1]
- Make sure you land on the mode tones (i.e. in Dorian land on the major 6th and hold it)
Note choises
Riffs
- Thrash Esque
Solos
- For low tempo phrases, use lots of slides & bends
- For high tempo, thrash-eque phrases, use lots of hammer ons/pull offs
- For high tempo, do huge descending runs
- Start the runs with some bends and sustain them, then suddenly go into the run
